Americus Restaurant was founded in 1929 by Nunzio Scaglione, after coming to America with his wife Laura and his 11 children. He began serving the community, opening directly across from the cigar city’s Hav-a-Tampa factory in Ybor City.
Grandson of Nunzio, Joe Scaglione, worked for Carmine and Malio Ivaronne at their father’s original restaurant, which was on the corner of Highland and MLK in Seminole Heights. Lying about his age to work, Joe first discovered his love for great Italian food and outstanding customer service. Carmine still runs the business at Ivarronies in North Tampa. Joe worked for his Uncle Pete and Basil, owners of the famous University Restaurant, a North Tampa favorite for over 35 years.
Joe started working for the original Tampa department store, Maas Brothers, and over 28 years rose to manage the company’s Flagship Store at West Shore Plaza – all by the age of 34. After 20 more years working for various retailers and owning a pizzeria in Ybor City, Joe purchased That’s Amore Restaurant, which is located on Tampa’s Harbour Island.
That’s Amore is the place you should call or visit for you next catering, party function or corporate event or rehearsal dinner. Joe and Larry will commit to give you the best service, the best food, at a reasonable price.
